FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ICO and PNG?

ICO bundles multiple resolutions in a single file. Older browsers and Windows still expect favicon.ico, so ICO remains the safest choice for site icons.

Is favicon.ico still needed today?

Many browsers and tools automatically request /favicon.ico from your site root. Providing one is the most reliable option.

Which sizes should I include?

16, 32, and 48 px cover most bookmarks and tabs. Add 64, 128, and 256 px for high-DPI displays and Windows tiles.

Can each size use a different image?

Yes. Start with a shared image, then replace only the sizes that need custom artwork, such as a bolder 16 px icon. Any size without a custom image is generated from the shared image.

Are transparent images supported?

Yes. Transparent PNG and WebP images can be included in favicon.ico without flattening the transparent areas.

Are images stored on the server?

Generation happens entirely in your browser. Files are never uploaded long-term and never shared with third parties.
